In the journals of Captains Lewis and Clark it was detailed how they had run their boats down through the, "gut-wrenching rapids", at Celilo Falls on the Columbia River. Following that ordeal they landed ashore on the Oregon side to recouperate at a place they called "Fort Rock" at what is today the historic city of The Dalles. When the Captains made their return trip, they stayed at the same location. The site would become the farthest military outpost in the old West. Today it has become a tourism spot for Sternwheelers like the Queen of the West.
